In Xanadu: A Quest, William Dalrymple (Penguin Books, 1989). The saddest thing about leaving the kóryos and becoming a human being is that I feel bad about abandoning my family for weeks or months to embark on a dangerous journey with a quixotic purpose. So I do it a little less often, and make up the difference with travel memoirs.
