I just adore this review. One of my favorites amongst what is already a litany of gems on this Substack. I am an economic analyst by trade (and by general mental framework) and -- I have come to realize -- oftentimes I need the muddy grey morass of nuance inherent to largescale technological and societal change to shock my brain out of its preferred logic: detached, analytical, objective, hopelessly inadequate at approximating the human experience.

This was a beautiful review. It’s remarkable how a world so distant from mine can still offer themes and lessons that resonate deeply. Thank you for that

Lovely piece. Makes me want to read it again - I first read it in the 60’s and didn’t realise it was a contemporary account, I thought it was all about life in the 30’s and earlier. Years later, we ended up as neighbours of Ronnie - he lived about a mile away, at Bottengoms, in Wormingford - and good friends. A lovely man.
